Calling 2
The Mogen tribe’s coach, evangelist Sungmin Kang, said 100 days of soccer practice can transform untrained kids into young Beckhams – if they do it all with bare feet.
Sungmin was dubbed a soccer genius in his youth. He was rejected by a soccer team because his techniques were too distinctive and unique for teamwork. He turned his attention instead to the further development of his soccer tricks, and became the world’s best in his field. But he gives it all up and turns to Thailand for the fulfillment of his evangelical calling. He makes his way to Lao Island, on the borders of Thailand and Myanmar, home to the Mogen tribe. The Mogen chief and the village people request that he coach the children in soccer; a sport they have grown so fond of that they play with a ball they have made by rolling up fabric. The children who had suffered the traumatic experiences of the 2004 tsunami now find joy in practicing the sport they love with Sungmin. It’s all stumbling, tumbling and flailing limbs at first, but through rigorous training in soccer technique, fitness and overall coordination, the Mogen children are reborn as the masterful Mogen soccer team.
As they compete for the first time in Mogen history, how will these bare-footed youngsters hold up against rival teams clad in soccer boots?
